As founding members of the DCGNY, Dalmatian fanciers immediately think of Bill and Dolores Postens whenever they see the Lotsa Spots kennel name. Dolores is an avid horse fan, owning and riding since she is 19 years old. Actually that is how she met her husband Bill. Dolores rode horses with Bill's father who introduced her to Bill. In the late '60's, they had boarded their paint horse at Pelham Bit Stables in the Bronx. These stables were owned by Hans & Diane Reimer of Snowcap Dalmatians. Dolores would accompany Diane to the dog shows and quickly fell for these beautiful spotted dogs.
When deciding on their kennel name after much discussion it was Lotsa Spots Farm & Kennel. This name appropriately fit their passion for paint and appaloosa horses as well as Dalmatians. Their first Dalmatian was Snowcap's Excalibur. Since then they have bred 34 Champions. When we spoke about the Dalmatian Club, Dolores shared that for 6 consecutive years one of her roles in the club was Show Secretary and Superintendent for the Club's Independent Specialty. She stated it was much easier at that time because nothing was automated. She would process each entry manually (entries were approximately 100 dogs), prepared all required AKC paperwork, prepare catalogs (including ads), judges books and have all copies made. She stated that back then you did not have to plan for disaster recovery, you just had to make sure a veterinarian was open during the show timeframes. She mentioned there were some organizations that would do all the work for $3 an entry which would reduce the earnings of the show. I'm sorry I could not agree with Dolores that manually was easier! That took a lot of time and organization. While they have many fond memories of their dogs, the one that comes to mind when asked which was their favorite was Rocky. CH Lotsa Spots Lowara's Magie finished his championship on August 30th, 1997 from the Bred By Exhibitor class taking a Specialty Best of Breed under judge Roy Stenmark. Rocky was a great bed partner who snuggled between Dolores and Bill for 12-1/2 years. When asking about a favorite show memory, Dolores quickly told me about the DCGNY evening Specialty held after BIS at the Monticello KC dog show when Lotsa Spots Simply Stellar took Winners Dog for a 5 pt. major under breeder judge Tim Robbins and earlier in the day also took Winners Dog for a 4 pt. major at the Monticello KC all breed show earning both majors in one day! Bill and Dolores currently live in Unadilla, NY with 2 horses, 5 Dalmatians and 5 Cocker Spaniels. They are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary on November 25th. While the dogs are more Dolores' passion than Bill's, Bill has never once given Dolores grief about the dogs. In their retirement years he has become more of a chauffeur driving Dolores to all the shows. |
